Things to Take to your Tax Appointment

Filing-in forms and paying taxes is definitely not the most pleasant activity for American citizens. In order to simplify things and get rid of the stress and worries, just make sure you have all the important documents before you go to your tax appointment.

If we take it logically, then you must bring in the tax forms you’ve filed-in last year (if any) and your Social Security card (as well as your spouse’s and the birthdates of your children, if any). An employee at RG Brenners says, “You will also have to bring with you all the W2and 1099 forms that you and/or your spouse have received during the last year from your employer or from any other source of incomes, tips and wages”. Don’t forget that your spouse must also be present at your tax appointment!

You should also have documents for any gambling winnings or losses, for stock exchange transactions or alimony amounts (both paid and received).

If you are running a small business, then the situation changes a little, as you’ll have to bring in some other documents, concerning your activity, your profit and loss, the assets your business owns, your subcontractors, the health insurance premiums you’ve paid, the business-related miles driven and so on.

Don’t forget to take into account the expenses that might decrease your tax payments. If you’ve paid for schooling or charitable actions, then you can add the receipts or the records of these payments to the other documents. Deductions can also be made on real estate taxes paid, vehicle taxes or registration fees, on irrigation tax (if you have no access to water).

You can also bring receipts that prove that you’ve improved your house or that you’ve had some moving expenses (as long as the moving is job-related and the new job is at least 50 miles farther than it was the previous one from your old home).
